Title: 2020 First Session Short-term Domestic Visiting Scholars is Now Open for On-line Application by October 15, 2019

Academia Sinica offers an opportunity for a short-term appointment of visiting scholars from other universities or research institutions in Taiwan. The purpose of this Program is to assist scholars outside Academia Sinica to conduct in-depth research on our campus in order to strengthen academic ties as well as facilitating the development of sciences and technologies in Taiwan.

Each applicant should complete the application on-line (https://db3n2u.sinica.edu.tw/~textdb/program) by October 15, 2019, and submit three copies of the completed application form to the intended host institute within Academia Sinica by the affiliated institution before October 25, 2019. The appointment for Domestic Visiting Scholars is awarded for the period from January to December 2020.

Title: 2020 First Session of Postdoctoral Scholar Program Is Open for Applications from August 1st to September 2nd , 2019

2020 First Session of Postdoctoral Scholar Program at Academia Sinica is open for applications from August 1st to September 2nd, 2019. All applications will be submitted and processed online. For more information, please refer to the following link: http://db3n2u.sinica.edu.tw/~textdb/program

Eligibility for potential postdoctoral scholars:

  1. Academia Sinica Postdoctoral Scholars (Distinguished): Applicants with their PhD conferred after January 2016.
  2. Postdoctoral Scholars (Regular): Applicants with their PhD conferred after January 2014.
  3. Applicants who had given birth after receiving their PhDs may defer the timeframe specified above for 2 years; while those who had served compulsory military service after receiving their PhDs may defer the timeframe specified above for a period equivalent to the length of their service, and should provide proof for such military service.

Applicants from the Divisions of Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Life Sciences should indicate the type(s) of scholars they intend to apply for. Applicants from the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences need not specify the type of scholars as it will be decided by the review committee.

Applicants who have not received their PhD by the application deadline must obtain a confirmation letter from their doctoral advisor stating that their PhD degree will be conferred prior to the appointment date. The appointment period of the first session of the 2020 Postdoctoral Scholars Program will be from January 1st, 2020 to December 31, 2021.

Applicants who apply for the Academia Sinica Postdoctoral Scholar (Distinguished) and applicants from the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences are required to submit a proposal detailing the goal, significance, background, methodology, and anticipated accomplishments of their research projects. Proposals lacking these aspects may result in adverse outcomes when reviewed.

The applicants must make sure that the application from their principle investigator (PI) and three letters of recommendation are submitted to the Department of Academic Affairs and Instrument Service (DAAIS) before the application deadline.

During the appointment period, a postdoctoral scholar should comply with the regulations stipulated by the Academia Sinica Personnel Office as well as the requirements and instructions of his/her sponsoring PI and host institute. For information on the rights and responsibilities of a postdoctoral scholar at Academia Sinica, please refer to: http://hro.sinica.edu.tw/cbemployee/cbemployeeen.html. In addition, a postdoctoral scholar will be required to sign an employment contract and a declaration stating that he/she is not the spouse, a relative by blood or a relative by marriage of the head(s) of the employing organization, institute, the sponsoring PI or co-PI.

Title: Call for Proposals: The 2020 Sustainability Science Research Program, Academia Sinica (Submission Deadline: July 19, 2019)
Content:

The 2020 Sustainability Science Research Program (the SSRP), Academia Sinica (AS) is now accepting proposal applications. The proposal and appendixes must be submitted to the Department of Academic Affairs and Instrument Service by July 19, 2019.

  1. The SSRP calls for proposals to fit in concert with global and national sustainable development policy via mission-oriented research. Furthermore, the proposals should define stakeholders, focus on applicability, connect to the international community, and identify the short-term as well as mid-term milestones.
  2. The main themes of the 2020 SSRP are “Investigation on Sustainable Energy Development and Its Related Long/Short-term Problems for Societal Implementation,” “Health Influences under the Environmental Changes,” and “Sustainable Agricultural Biotechnology of Environmentally Friendly also Multi-beneficial.” Researchers in different fields at Academia Sinica are strongly encouraged to conduct in-depth discussion on a strategic plan which leads to practical application, and to target to the related technology development in economy, society, engineering, materials, biotechnology and data science. In addition to filling the knowledge gaps, a more sophisticated and practical sustainability strategy is expected. The SSRP looks forward to the integration of research findings and suggestions to the nation’s relevant authorities.
  3. To strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and implementation of research results, only integrated research projects are accepted. Each integrated research project should contain three (3) to six (6) subprojects. Within a project, at least one third (1/3) of the subproject PIs must be AS research personnel.
  4. A project director must be a full-time AS employee at the level of Assistant Research Fellow or above. A faculty member jointly appointed by AS may serve as a project director with a full-time AS employee serving as the co-director for the main project.
  5. Current or pending projects within or outside AS that are partially connected to this project proposal shall be disclosed.
  6. Current awardees of the Career Development Award (CDA) shall strictly follow the guidelines of CDA if they wish to apply for the SSRP.
  7. Application Materials: Hard copies of the proposal and appendixes must be delivered to the Department of Academic Affairs and Instrument Service by the deadline of July 19, 2019, and electronic files should be submitted to leeliwen@gate.sinica.edu.tw. A confirmation email will be sent upon receipt of application. The proposal file name should follow “2020 SSRP Proposal-PI name” format.

Title: The 2019 Academia Sinica Fellowships for Doctoral Candidates in the Humanities and Social Sciences Now Accepting Applications

The 2019 Academia Sinica (AS) Fellowships for Doctoral Candidates in the Humanities and Social Sciences (the Fellowships) are now accepting applications. Interested applicants should refer to the “Guidelines for Academia Sinica Fellowships for Doctoral Candidates in the Humanities and Social Sciences,” and submit an application package, including an official transcript, a research plan, reprints of publications, a curriculum vitae, and two letters of recommendation from the applicant's affiliated institution, to a host institute or research center in the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences at AS. Note that one applicant may submit only one application, and the Fellowships are currently unavailable to citizens of the People's Republic of China.

During the fellowship, the selected applicants should spend at least two to three days a week at AS to work on their doctoral dissertation with an advisor from the host institute or research center.

Title: The 2020 Academia Sinica Thematic Research Program Now Accepting Applications (Submission Deadline: March 25, 2019)

The 2020 Academia Sinica Thematic Research Program accepts applications online till March 25, 2019. Applications received after the deadline will not be reviewed.

  1. The Thematic Research Program (the Program) of Academia Sinica (AS) aims to support projects with research advantages, potential and breakthroughs in accordance with its medium and long-term academic development. The Program encourages AS research teams to put forward an integrated (with subprojects) or a collaborative (without subprojects) project proposal. There are no limits set on the number of project directors or subprojects of an integrated project. Proposals should be prepared to reflect actual research needs.
  2. Final results of the applications will be announced in October 2019, and selected projects will commence on January 1, 2020 upon receipt of budget plan approvals by legislation. All project directors (excluding Co-PIs) shall sign the “Project Execution Agreement, Academia Sinica Thematic Research Program” before project inception.
  3. All applications will be accepted online only. Please go to the homepage of AS or http://db3n2u.sinica.edu.tw/~textdb/program/index.php. Applicants should refer to the “Guidelines for Applications for Funding from the Academia Sinica Thematic Research Program,” complete the online application, and make sure all needed materials are uploaded to the Academia Sinica On-Line Service System in time.
